step father, King Claudius. But, there are other conflicts as well, and especially two which also deal with father and son relationships. In the following paper we examine the conflicts
between father and son, discussing Hamlet and Claudius, Laertes and Polonius, and Fortibras and Fortinbras. Hamlet and Claudius The conflict between Hamlet and Claudius is incredibly clear, and
the foundation for the entire play. Claudius is responsible for the murder of Hamlets real father, the former king. Claudius is married to Hamlets mother now, and Hamlet is expected
to roll over and accept the realities. However, Hamlets father, in the form of a ghost, comes to him and tells him that he was murdered and that Hamlet must
seek vengeance for the act. As we can see, even without understanding any more of the story, Hamlet has some very serious issues with his step father, Claudius, and throughout
the play he works towards finding revenge through finding the perfect time to kill him. Interestingly enough, however, through feigned and real insanity, through many bouts of confusion, when Hamlet
does get the chance to seek revenge, and kill his step father, he hesitates: Now, this hesitation has nothing to do with the real conflict that is taking place
between the two, but more to do with the fact that Hamlet likely feels killing Claudius in the back is not a righteous way to seek vengeance, no matter what
the ghost of his father says: "A villain kills my father; and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send To heaven. O, this is hire and
salary, not revenge....Up, sword; and know thou a more horrid hent" (NA). According to one particular author, "The prince decides to wait patiently for the opportune moment because for Hamlet
