service of organizational goals is immense. Everyone remembers September 11, 2001 as a day when terrorism first invaded U.S. soil. While Hamas was not responsible for that, another radical organization in the name of Islam was, and while most are careful to note that the destruction was not caused by Muslims per se, the truth is that it is hard to get away from an Arab world that thrives on death and destruction. They want what they want at all costs. That is obvious. What is not so obvious are the roads taken, the groups which formed and who belongs to what organization and who has claimed responsibility for what action. Things become confused as there are a variety of groups in the Middle East that see the status quo as a threat to their way of life. Most have heard of the PLO and Yassir Arafat. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is in fact headed by Arafat, and is not a fundamentalist group but rather, a main secular, nationalist organization associated with Palestinian politics ("Terrorism," 2002). Palestine is what those of Muslim association see as their territory just as Jews see Israel as theirs. The fundamental problem is that both groups believe that the precious land they inhabit belongs to them and there is little in the way of compromise being offered. Israel and the PLO signed a deal in 1993 and it was then that Yassir Arafat founded the Palestinian Authority (PA) which is a relatively new, Palestinian-led government for the West Bank and Gaza ("Terrorism," 2002). Hamas and the PA often cooperate, but they sometimes compete, and sometimes they even clash (2002).
