Halothane Halothane in an inhalant form of anesthetic and "It is prescribed for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia" (Mosbys Medical, Nursing, & Allied Health Dictionary, 1998; 3DEE). Mosbys further indicates that it is not an anesthetic that is offered for obstetrics, unless there is the requirement of uterine relaxation. The adverse affects can be very serious but are considered rare. The adverse reactions can be "hepatic necrosis, cardiac arrest or arrhythmia, hypotension, malignant hyperthermia nausea, and emesis" (Mosbys Medical, Nursing, & Allied Health Dictionary, 1998; 3DEE). According to another article about this particular anesthetic it is easy to overdose this particular anesthetic as it is very potent (The Thomson Corporation, 2005). It is also an anesthetic that does not relieve any form of pain but just causes unconsciousness (The Thomson Corporation, 2005). As such it is quite often used in combination with other agents in order to reduce or control the pain of a patient (The Thomson Corporation, 2005). On rare occasions it can be toxic in adults, but has not been proven to be toxic in children (The Thomson Corporation, 2005). It is also know to have a pleasant odor and thus is used quite often for children who are in need of an anesthetic (The Thomson Corporation, 2005). In terms of causing serious liver problems we look at one particular article that focuses on this particular toxic problem related to halothane. According to Poterack (2004) there are two forms of liver problems cause by this anesthetic. "Type I hepatotoxicity is benign, self-limiting, and relatively common...is not characterized by jaundice or clinically evident hepatocellular disease" (Poterachk, 2004).
