OHearn. The book is a set of accounts by many multiracial and/or multicultural authors about their own experiences in growing up. The experiences related are off the wall and strange
to more conventional upbringings, but are also a valuable insight into the way in which society operates. For many readers there may be the traditional paradigm of black white
divides, however, for many authors in this book there are many unusual combinations that may not be expected, which result in some strange assumptions by those around them. For example,
the editor, Claudine Chiawei OHearn is half Chinese, her mother Coming from Taiwan where she fled after the revolution, and half American Irish (OHearn vii). The realisation of difference is
seen even before OHearn as both families resisted the marriage, her mothers family even hiring a private detective to dig up unsavoury information on her future husband. However, it is
also interesting to note that the experience for the family must have been good, as her sisters also went onto marry Caucasian rather than Asian men. OHearn uses the term
hapas to describe them, an Hawaiian term for half (OHearn viii, and as such creates a cultural diversity in the book itself, taking from different cultures to provide the most
appropriate terms. The way in which OHearn fitted into the society around her must have been lacking, as she herself tells of the many stories she made up to
explain her background and looks, passing for a range passing for Hawaiian, Italian and even Russian. These stories were made up and told to strangers in bars and restaurants (OHearn
