a number of theories as to why Hadrians Wall was constructed and what its function was in terms of the expansion of the Roman empire in Britain: however, most historians agree that it was intended to mark the northern frontier of the empire, and to separate the Romans, in the south of Romanised Britain, from the barbarians in the north. Opinions differ as to who the barbarians actually were; the country which is now known as Scotland was at the time inhabited by Picts, although some commentators suggest that even the Picts came to the area after the time the Wall was built, and it was a number of other tribes who provided the greatest threat to the Roman presence in the north. In any event, for many years it fulfilled its purpose of defining the northern border of the empire, and of acting as a deterrent to the northern barbarian tribes, even though it could not be considered as having particularly efficient defences in itself. Even though the Wall is sometimes referred to as the border between England and Scotland, in fact most of Northumberland, which is in England, is north of the Wall, and there is no section of the Wall which actually separates England and Scotland. At the time the Wall was built, the political entity of Scotland did not exist; the original Scots actually came across from Ireland after the Roman colonisers had left.
