surely not an asset to the country and the field of technology. We are told to see them as dangers to society and dangers to technology. However, the truth may
be far different than that. Hackers may well be one group of people who ensure our technology becomes more and more secure and refined. They are also people who may
well do us a favor by politically sounding an alarm of some kind or another due to their privileged information. So, while the public opinion is that hackers are clearly
destructive to our society and our technology, there may be more to the story than we know. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines hackers and hacking. The paper
begins with a definition of hackers, discussing why hackers do what they do, and then moves on to discussing hacker ethics. Corporations and the Internet are then discussed in regards
to threats from hackers. The paper ends with a discussion of whether or not hackers are as destructive as we have been told. Definition of a Hacker "Not
all people who call themselves hackers break into systems or commit computer crimes. Indeed, the term hacker originally meant anyone who loved computing, and there is still an annual Hackers
Conference of such people" (Denning, 2002; introduction.html#why). The individuals who break into systems, through their extensive knowledge of computers, are also called hackers and "they refer to their tools as
hacking programs and hacking worksheets. They write articles such as A Novices Guide to Hacking and Yet Another File on Hacking Unix" (Denning, 2002; introduction.html#why). From this we can see
