Then he goes on to explain how Yale University professor Jacob Hacker claims that people are worried about losing their jobs as opposed to being happy for the ones they
have (Pethokoukis, 2006). The ideas related to this paradox touches on many good points. After all, if Americans are richer, why are they so worried? At the time of the
writing, the market was still robust. Today, in 2009, one is not surprised by all the fear. The layoffs are real and not something people are just talking about. Hackers
(2006) book delves into fear but provides ways to measure it through his address of various topics. Pethokoukis (2006) goes on to hone in on Hackers conclusion, which is
that income volatility is the cause of that insecurity. It is true that in the past, people would get jobs and expect to retire from those jobs after decades of
work. Today, not only are people not anticipating staying with one company for 50 years, they do not even expect a retirement package or adequate benefits. People try to get
jobs at companies with good benefits, but as time goes on, benefits appear to be a luxury and not something that just comes with the territory. To some extent, it
is perception that is the culprit. Psychology plays an extraordinary role. In examining Hackers (2006) positions, there are many areas that he touches on such as health, benefits, education,
