all the argument amongst the religious philosophers past and present. Who is this God? Why does He like us? Why does Man need Him? David Hume, a Scottish philosopher during
the 1700s tried to come to grips with this question in his book, The Dialogues. Within the pages of this document, which he incidentally wrote shortly before his death, he
contrasts the Cleanthes argument and the Demea argument to arrive at some conclusion and opinion on the matter. It can be said that Hume had plenty of material to draw
from in his eventful life. Incredibly, it can be said that his writing did not begin to take place until he was well into his thirties. Some writers, it can
be said, need to marinate a bit longer than most. This may have been the case in Humes own life. When one is writing about human nature and its relationship
with Religion, then it necessarily takes a good deal of time and study. This life of ups and downs began when he accepted a position tutoring the Marquess of
Annadale, who experts acknowledge as being seriously disturbed(Hume, 2002). He accepted this position shortly after being turned down for a position with the University of Edinborough because of his highly
controversial writings on religion and morality (Hume, 2002). In fact, he continued to turn out essays and critical writings on everything pertaining to society, human relations, and morality. Many, it
would seem, openly contemptuous and considered him an infidel(Hume, 2002). Many of the areas in which he philosophized were epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, economic and social theory, and religion. One
