Jean Jacques Rousseau, Carl von Clausewitz, Edmund Burke and Mary Wollstonecraft. The answers come from careful analysis of their writings. 1. Hobbes, a precursor of the Enlightenment, asserts "right reason" generates political structure. However, Napoleon, the practical politician and intellectual child of Rousseau, argues "self interest" and "fear" generates political structure and inform political action. Place each of authors on the range between these two views. In his writing, The Leviathan, Hobbes actually moves humanity toward materialistic and rigid philosophies, as well as the "natural state" of human beings, which is to be in constant conflict with one another. Though his ideas of "right reason" might seem to establish political structure (or lack thereof, in some cases), Hobbes has also argued that sometimes our fears and desires end up leading much of humanity to a condition known as the commonwealth, one in which humanity surrenders its individual powers to the authority of a specific (and absolute) sovereign. Mans natural state, Hobbes believes, is that of chronic chaos, one in which constant arguments and chronic states of war are more than norm than not. The only way to prevent such things from happening are to put a good deal of power into one ruler (or, at the very least, a collection of rulers who wont end up fighting among themselves). According to Hobbes, such individual obedience to a sovereign leader is absolutely necessary, in order to prevent humanity and its endless state of war.
