But all of that has changed - thanks to globalization and other competitive forces, personnel has morphed into human resources, which is charged with
caring for and dealing with todays workforce. And the workforce is a challenge; within a country, diversity issues of race, color, gender and age impact a companys ability to function
if not handled correctly. Added to that is the fact that most large companies compete globally. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that a global survey detailing human resources
practices, conducted in 2007, determined that managing talent is the most important human resources challenge that organizations face; and it will likely remain at the top of the corporate agenda
until at least 2015 (Eyre, 2008). Respondents also believed that global talent sourcing would become the fastest HR trend, "as more organisations recognise that they have to move their businesses
to new locations in order to access the people they need to be successful (Eyre, 2008, 11). Friedman (2007) has gone
on to say that globalization doesnt only provide opportunities for companies and organizations to move into different markets, it also puts pressure on the human resources management (HRM) function, forcing
it to adapt to the changing needs of the organization and to ultimately add greater value. Thanks to advances in telecommunications technologies and the Internet, corporations and other organizations have
been able to outsource various functions (such as customer service and technical jobs) to countries that have lower labor rates (Friedman, 2007).
