2009). This is a great strategy that has worked well - at least in Western countries. However, in emerging and developing
economies, any kind of human resources development, or human resources management is all but non-existent. In this paper, weve been asked to examine human resources management as it pertains to
multinational banks in Tanzania. The literature is very scarce on this particular topic, so weve opted to do a general overview of HRM in Tanzania, then a focus on the
banking industry. With this in mind, we can extrapolate and introduce some possible alternatives for dealing with this issue. The main problem
with any type of HRM or HRD (human resources development) in Tanzania industry is that it doesnt exist. For one thing, there is a definite lack of any kind of
industry-wide program for human resources professionals in this country - basically, any programs that do exist tend to lack any kind of overall strategy, coordination - and most importantly, lack
of funding (Debrah and Ofori, 2006). There also tends to be the problem of potential problems such as bureaucratic bottlenecks (Debrah and Ofori, 2006).
Adding to the particular issue is the patchwork quilt of the banking industry in this nation. Tanzania has been very open to foreign banking, which means a
