of a lot of pros and cons. What factors should be considered when trying to decide on outsourcing? One huge factor is
cost - and not just cost savings. Violino (2004) and others point out that there are a lot of hidden costs when it comes to outsourcing. Behind the concept of
outsourcing is a company spending a lot of money and time on vender evaluation, managing the contract, security enhancement and traveling to the offshoring sites (Violino, 2004). This doesnt even
take into account potential severance paid to employees who are laid off as a result of the outsourcing (Violino, 2004). What also
needs to be taken into consideration is the transition period (Violino, 2004). Though on the surface most businesses believe that one can simply outsource tasks to suppliers and walk away,
this isnt the case. Time is needed for internal knowledge to be transferred to those on the outsourcing side. This could mean travel time and expenses, or cultural/language training for
employees who end up on the contractors site (Violino, 2004). This could mean time taken to transfer data between systems (not to mention the addition of more network bandwidth and
security technologies) (Violino, 2004). Then there is managing the contract once the outsourcing has been complete - the company cant afford to simply dump tasks on the supplier and walk
away. Lack of oversight is a sure invitation to disaster. What specific human resource activities are appropriate for outsourcing and why?
