dilemma. Does she authorize additional payment to help a valued employee with his medical bills? This is a nice gesture; the problem here is that it starts a dangerous precedent.
What happens when the next employee, who is hospitalized for a heart attack, also needs help with medical bills? Or what about the employee who gives birth, and also needs
help with the medical bills? How does one determine what is "fair" in this case? The answer here is that there is no determination as to what is fair. So
the direct answer needs to be "no help." There are, however, some things the HR person can do to mitigate some of the
costs of the medical care. The first is to examine the company-based insurance plan, assuming the company has such a thing (its not specified in this particular case study). Its
likely that, with intervention from the company, the insurance company might be more willing to bend the rules a little bit. The HR
professional can also research certain sources to direct the patient for help in payment, such as lending institutions or other potential locations. The professional can also work directly with the
patients health care providers to see if some kind of reasonable payment schedule can be worked out, and then perhaps set aside some of the patients salary to handle payback.
Finally, the HR person can help organize a fundraiser to help the patient pay for his medical bills. Perhaps the employees might be
