The personnel office was also the place where benefits were determined, performance reviews were stored and complaints were registered. In this guise, "personnel" was more of a staff position, an administrative department best known for screening, paper-pushing and the place where people went when they were about to be fired. However, as workforces are becoming more diverse and globalized, the personnel function of a company evolved into human resources management, or HRM. HRM goes beyond paper-pushing, screening and firing. Rather, it is an important part of a companys strategic plan and initiative. HRM Definition A great deal has been written about human resource management, but what, exactly is it? The practice of human resource management "entails planning, implementing, and managing recruitment, as well as selection, training, career and organizational development initiatives within an organization (Human Resource Management, 2011). In other words, HRM is responsible for getting the right person into the right job, at the right time and, through a variety of methods, ensures that individual receives the right training and education to do the job well for the organization and to advance. The overall goal of HRM is to help maximize an organizations productivity by both optimizing employee effectiveness and improving the work lives of those employees (Human Resource Management, 2011).
