Even in the midst of arguments against human cloning, a number of researchers continue to develop plans for human cloning, and some have even argued that they will clone a human being regardless of legal and ethical arguments against this process. The reason for the desire to continue human cloning research? The belief that human cloning can have a number of substantial and beneficial uses and the outcomes of human cloning can change the way issues like fertility are addressed. In order to consider the benefits, though, it is first necessary to relate existing arguments against human cloning. In particular, it is beneficial to consider the reasons for such distinct debate on this issue, as well the call for an application of ethics in assessing this issue. The existing system of medical ethics in the United States is based on the assertion that the protection of individuals rights and the protection of individual interests will be taken into account as a part of the carative or curative model. Inherently, though, this kind of assertion is challenged by medical interests, including corporate interests and the views of medical professionals, which shift over time to correspond with social, cultural and ethical expectations. Increasing interest in biotechnologies, including cloning and improvements in vitro fertilization techniques to improve the capacity for women to bear children has come into view as a part of modern medical debates.
