1. Introduction Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), is a large global bank which has achieved rapid growth over the
last few decades. With the tagline "the worlds local bank" there is an indication of the strategy which has been used to propel the bank forward in this manner; a
strategy of customisation to local markets which has been undertaken with the use of numerous acquisitions (, Grant, 2004; Jain, 1989). Today the bank has more than 10,000 branches located
across 83 countries (HSBC, 2007). Branches are located globally, including Europe, the Americas, the Asia-Pacific region, Africa and the Middle East (HSBC, 2007). In addition to this HSBC is now
