The firm has had to adapt and change in order to survive, dealing with increased competition as well as major changes not only in the number of staff, but also the type of staff. For example, the company shed over 100,000 jobs since between 1990 and 1995 alone simply due to the use of technology (Morris, 1996). Most of these jobs were skilled jobs of engineers who were no longer required with the newer exchanges which did not require the same level of maintenance or repairs as a result of the new technology (Morris, 1996). Further job losses have taken place since that time. The result is a change in structure as a result of the loss of so many employees is also very clear; fewer workers in the skilled jobs and a lessening of the lower levels of the hierarchy. Other major shifts have seen increased use of offshoring in order to gain financial advantages. In an organization such as this, where there is a high level of reliance on technical skills of relatively few employees as well as services standards, at both customer contact point and at technical and management levels.
