In this paper a university; Studyland, with 273 staff and 2,000 student requires an examination to take place of some HRM aspects. Appraisals and Performance Management.
Assessment need to take place at several levels, both at organisational level, as seen with the inclusion of results into national league tables. But also
at a lower level. The parts of an organisation make up the whole, and how these can be developed to increase the performance of an organisation overall. If the small
components such as measurements of different departments can be increased then the overall performance will be bettered. To understand this we need to consider what we mean by performance assessment
tool, the way that performance assessment is used and implemented, as well as some of the legalities that may need to be considered when implementing performance assessments.
There are many definitions, of these types of tools. In this paper we will focus on the people orientated appraisal techniques and tools, however, we need to
remember that any process may be measured and assessed. In defining what is meant by performance assessment we can look at general definitions. A good definition states; "Assessment tools help
generate reliable feedback, identify the critical behaviours for success, and provide direction for customized development planning" (Morical, 1999; 43). In applying to his to a practical scenario we can see
how it can as true when considering a machine that manufactures widgets automatically or looking at the human capital that is employed by a company. The key here is
