HPV infection at some point during their lifetimes (Feemster and Kahn, 2010). The Food and Drug Administration approved Gardasil, a quadrivalent HPV vaccine for use with girls and women, in
June 2006 and its use was approved for boys and men in October 2009, with a bivalent vaccine, Cervarix, approved in October 2009 to be used with girls and women
(Feemster and Kahn, 2010). Despite the fact that a recommendation for universal vaccination for adolescent girls was issued in 2006, as of 2007 HPV vaccination for girls remained low,
ranging from 6 to 25 percent. Principal barriers to increasing this rate are parental concerns about safety and also the fact that the vaccine is the most expensive among those
that are routinely recommended (Feemster and Kahn, 2010). Also, while national recommendations target girls aged 11 to 12, research shows that both clinicians and parents are more inclined to recommend
vaccination to older adolescent daughters (Feemster and Kahn, 2010). Parental refusal of vaccination for their children largely stems from the perception that this implies that they condone premarital sexual activity
and they fear that it will lead to indulgence in risky sexual behaviors. Furthermore, lack of education or understanding of HPV and HPV vaccines also plays a role (Feemster and
Kahn, 2010). While HPV vaccination literature has focused on protecting women and girls, as letters published in Canadian Physician indicate HPV infects both men and women, and HPV
