and contraction of this virus is a known precursor for cervical cancer (Cutts, et al, 2007). HPV was identified as the principal cause of close to 260,000 deaths globally in
2005 due to cervical cancer (Cutts, et al, 2007). Recently, a vaccine has been developed and approved for use with females by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which
protects against four strains of HPV, which includes the two strains that are responsible 70 percent of all cases of cervical cancer (Udesky 979). The vaccine does not totally
eliminate the risk of cervical cancer for those inoculated before they become sexually active, but it does diminish it considerably, therefore, it would seem axiomatic that this would be a
logical and positive precaution. However, there is considerably public resistance to using the HPV vaccine, which is marketed under the name of Gardasil by Merck Pharmaceutical. Examination of this debate
conclusively shows that vaccination for young girls is a wise precaution. Approximately 20 states are currently considering legislation that would require vaccination against HPV for pre-teen girls (Udesky
979). However, religious conservatives and over groups, such as the national Jewish womens organization Hadassah, oppose mandatory vaccination requirements (Udesky 979). Their objections stem from, first of all, the allegation
that the vaccine has not be proven safe; and, secondly, from the fact that HPV is not spread by casual contact, but is rather an STD (Udesky 979). Therefore, opponents
of vaccine argue that vaccination sends the wrong message to young girls about becoming sexually active. First of all, pertaining to the issue of safety, the FDA requires rigorous
