In the treatise, Descartes introduces methodic doubt, in other words, tearing down everything that was believed as true and suspend judgment about any believe that is even slightly doubtful (Descartes, 1641). Those things that were not absolutely certain required further proof (Descartes, 1641). In other words, everything needs to be questioned, and there are few things that can be taken at face value. These days, of course, few things are taken at face value. Were taught, from birth, that its okay to question things about which we have grave doubts. We understand that doubt is the basis of which more research is conducted in order to verify and prove something to be true. This is how research is conducted - hypotheses are introduced and then research and/or experiments are conducted to either support or refute them. In fact, we assume that were supposed to doubt almost everything (even innocence of guilt in a crime) until its proven beyond a reasonable doubt. But this wasnt the case during the 17th century. Though skepticism and doubt had existed in Greece since 4 BCE, those who dared to doubt or who said it was okay to express doubts and questions werent held in high regard. However, doubt truly took a backseat shortly after Christianity gained a foothold. It was considered sacrilegious to question the will of the divine (Hooker, 1997).
