The issues of double consciousness and hybridism are exampled in the character of Abel, who must come to terms with who he is, where he has come from, and where he must go. This novel chronicles the story of Abel and his quest for himself. The novel opens with Abel returning to the reservation after the war. His grandfather meets him at the bus station and they go home together. The contrast of the old traditional Native American and the new generation illustrates the vast differences in self awareness and identity. Francisco, the grandfather, is proud and sure of who he is, even though the townspeople make fun of him. In stark contrast, is his grandson, Abel, who stumbles from the bus, half drunk. There the reader learns that Abels parents have died when he was a young boy and that his grandfather has raised him. But, the man that has returned to the town is not the boy that the grandfather, Francisco, raised. He has changed. He does not know who he is or where he fits in to the American Dream. This is indicative of post-colonialism and the effects of colonization of indigenous peoples. Most colonization begins, it can be stated, with a desire for land, goods, resources, and strategic military operations. In a struggle of strong versus the weak, the might of the invading principality overcomes the weaker culture and as such has an influence from the beginning. A blending of cultures is almost immediate in that even a culture which rises from the ashes of a decolonized nation is never as native as it once was, but is at best a hybrid.
