the Love Canal debacle these days is an example of environmentalism gone horribly awry, complete with chemical seepage, pollution and very sick children. Love Canal today is considered by many
to be a "waste dump which perhaps has forever scarred the city of Niagara Falls" (Alfred University, 1998). In this paper, well explore some philosophical sides of the Love Canal
incident. a. Explain how Hooker Chemical could argue that it was NOT acting irresponsibly when disposing of chemicals in Love Canal.
Though Hooker Chemical could be considered to have been acting irresponsibly when it came to dumping, this company had several "outs" when it came to Love Canal. First of
all, Hooker never claimed that the site was going to be used for anything except a municipal and chemical disposal site, and treated it as such. Though dumping toxins isnt
exactly a wonderful thing to do in any community, Hooker never tried to hide the purpose of the site and, in fact, acted responsibly to fill the canal in 1953,
to seal it with a thick layer of clay. Additionally, Hooker actually warned the city of Niagara, when the city was looking
at using the site for urban expansion. When the city forced the sale of the site through "imminent domain," Hooker added a disclaimer to the deeds warning - and accepted
only one dollar for the site. So we can say that while "dumping" is not necessarily responsible, Hooker tried to act responsibly. b. Explain how at least two
parties besides Hooker Chemical could be blamed for the disaster at Love Canal. Who was responsible? Explain answer. One of the
