in America. Many across the nation give in to the prevailing winds of resistance which tell kids that they are too poor, too homespun to go further than working the
local coal mines. Homer Hickams story proves that big dreams can be realized even if they were first born in a small town. Homer grew up in a small
mining town in West Virginia. The general way of life left most young men little choice as to what they would do for a living. Most would go into the
coal mines like their fathers before them. Most would resign themselves to that fate without another thought. Most thought that, that was where Homer Hickam would end up. They were
wrong. "Until I began to build and launch rockets, I didnt know my home town was at war with itself over its children, and that my parents were locked in
a kind of bloodless combat over how my brother and I would live our lives"(Hickam). What Homer will be quick to tell anyone who speaks with him is that
he fully rests a lot of the credit on his early association with a group of very noble people: his teachers. Many of the teachers fell into the same pit
of resignation which sent young mind after young mind into the coal mines, but there were a few who hoped to change that statistic. These were the teachers who found
and inspired Homer to excel in mathematics, so much so that he studied advanced mathematics on his own and of his own accord. Of course, Homer was faced with
