determine leadership qualities that can end up making that person a success. Homer Hickam Jr., who grew up in rural West Virginia, a coal miners son, and ended up achieving
his dream of becoming a rocket engineer and leaving his humble upbringing behind. The inspirational story found its way into literature (as a book entitled Rocket Boys: A Memoir by
Homer Hickam Jr.) and a movie (October Sky, which opened in 1999, and starred Laura Dern and Jake Gyllenhaal). In this paper, well examine the qualities that made Hickam a
leader and an inspiration in his field. Raised in Coalwood, West Virginia in 1943, Hickams mind was fired up during high school
when, upon the launching of the Russian satellite Sputnik, was determined to leave his coal mining town to become an engineer of rockets (Homer Hickam Online, 2006). The reality, however,
was that, at the time, a coal miners son couldnt really aspire to the idea of becoming a scientist -- he was told, time and again, that rocket scientists dont
come from mining towns (Homer Hickam Online, 2006). Despite the comments, however, Hickam worked hard, found people who supported him in his dream, and ended up winning first prize in
a national science fair (Homer Hickam Online, 2006). With help from a supportive teacher and inspired by rocket genius Werner von Braun, he eventually received a scholarship to Virginia Polytechnic
