homeowners about energy conservation. Good evening. All of you have read the reports about climate change, global warming and dependence on foreign oil.
We all know that energy costs are going up - anyone looking at his or her electric bill during the past several months can attest to that. One benefit of
energy conservation is that the electric bills go down, as do the gas bills, for those of you who use more natural gas.
Energy conservation is important for reasons other than the checkbook, of course. Remember last summer and those terrible "ozone days?" How many of you have kids with asthma that couldnt
go out and play because the air quality was so poor? Energy conservation involves keeping our car off the streets during the hottest parts of the day, or waiting to
mow our lawns until evening, when the sun goes down. We also need to focus on getting more types of renewable energy in
our homes and even in our cars. Renewable energy is defined as that which is replaced quickly by natural processes (Renewable Energy Resources, 1998). An example of a renewable source
is solar power, or wind power as these are immediately available through natural means. Non-renewable energy is a source of energy that isnt automatically renewable. Oil is an example -
once an oil reserve is depleted or tapped out, then thats it. No more is produced from that particular well. You might be
thinking that this means getting solar panels on top of your house. Thats not really a good idea; many of the solar panels arent hooked into the electrical grid yet.
