each country in order to get the necessary regulations and licenses to get the product to market. More importantly, they need to have an understanding of cultural cues and behavior
in order to properly understand how business is done in each country. Sociologist Geert Hofstede, understanding that countries differ in values, mores
and perception of situations, conducted a five-year analysis of 100,000 individuals from 40 countries (International Business Center, 2003). From that study, he developed a model, or method, that identified four
primary dimensions that could be used to differentiate cultures (International Business Center, 2003). The four categories are power distance index (PDI), which measures the equality between people in a countrys
society (International Business Center, 2003). Individualism (IDV) focuses on how strongly the society focuses on individual achievements versus collective achievements (International Business Center, 2003). Masculinity (MAS) covers how highly society
reinforces the traditional masculine work role and control (International Business Center, 2003). Uncertainty Avoidance (UAI) studies the level of tolerance for risk-taking, uncertainty and ambiguity (International Business Center, 2003).
Some years later, Hofstede added a fifth dimension, that of Long-Term Orientation. LTO determines the degree to which a society embraces (or doesnt)
long-term commitments and respect for tradition and the way things have always been done (International Business Center, 2003). By understanding the five
