in order to explain international cultures and customs. However, it is interesting to apply both these models to the hospitality industries
in both France and Norway as well. First well examine both countries approach to hospitality, then describe how the Hofstede Cultural Dimension model and the Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck Framework fit
these. We can possibly assume that, given the nature of these two countries, it would be Norway that would have the edge
in a strong hospitality industry - the view many people have of the French is that they are ethnocentric snobs, whereas there really is no view - either positive or
negative - of the Norwegians. Before we analyze the two countries however, lets examine the two models.
Hofstedes model offers four approaches for analysis: individual/collectivism, by which people define themselves as separate entities as opposed to a group; power distance, which is defined as
how less powerful members of an organization accept unequal distribution of power within an organization; uncertainty avoidance, discussing the extent to which members of a society are threatened by uncertain
situations and how far they will go to create stability and masculinity/femininity, the extent by which society emphasizes assertiveness vs. passivity (Moss and Vinten, 2001).
In the meantime, Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck focus more on cultural aspects - and Hofstede agrees that organizations between countries are not culture-free (Hofstede, 1995). Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck
