on one theory - namely that the American Dream is wonderful in concept, but because of schisms due to race or class, its a flawed concept. She equates the American
Dream with that of success (mainly financial success and well-being), and notes that ". . . three-quarters of Americans, compared with only one-third of Britons, West Germans and Hungarians .
. . agree they have a good chance of comparing their standard of living" (p. 12). The problem here, she notes is that success only seems available to a certain
class of people and, as a result, the American Dream is only available to certain people as well. She points out that tenets of the American Dream are flawed -
the first one, she points out, that "everyone can participate equally and can always start over" is flawed, for example, not only because of racism and sexism but because those
who dont fit the "model" of success. She also pokes holes in the fact that the American Dream is under the control of most people, and success and failure are
in the hands of most people. She criticizes this tenet harshly, noting that " . . . if success results from individual volition, then failure results from lack of volition."
In some cases, Hochschild is absolutely right - gaining the American Dream requires a great deal of reality check, and not moving
into the tendency of falling into fantasies and assuming that, just because there is a dream, it will be fulfilled. The problem with Hochschilds treatise, however, is twofold. First, she
tends to see things in black and white, without allowing for shades of gray. Second, she tends to blame race, religion, gender and so on for the failure of people
