Since its establishment more than 20 years ago, Hizbollah has been known as both a religious and a political power in Lebanon, partnering with the Shiite
population and spouting its own brand of Islamic fundamentalism and Islamic resistance (Globalterrorism 101.com). In addition, this group has strong ties to both Iran and Syria, making it a powerful
ally (Globalterrorism 101.com). Its been said that any peace process between Israel and the Arab world will be more than agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization -- Israel
will also have to make peace with Hizbollah (Globalterrorism 101.com). This is likely to be somewhat more difficult. As of 2004, Hizbollah
boasted 20,000 active members (PBS.org, 2004). Yet despite vague connections to suicide bombings and other terrorist incidents, Hizbollah consistently notes that it isnt a terrorist organization, as it focuses more
on politics than it does on armed might (PBS.org, 2004). In the Lebanese parliament, Hizbollah holds twelve seats, making this the single largest-party group in the National Assembly (PBS.org, 2004).
Furthermore, Emile Lahoud (Lebanons president and a Maronite Christian) considers that Hezbollah is a "legitimate political organization" in Lebanon, rather than a
