to be. We have a tendency to think that there are enough medicines, that science is progressing well in curtailing it and will eventually end it, and that the knowledge
for the public is sufficient to keep it at bay. But, the truth is that it is still a very serious issue, and one that touches most people in one
way or another. The following paper discusses the nature of the topic scientifically speaking, the impact it has on society, and then provides personal comments by this writer. The
Nature of the Topic It should come as no surprise that the topic of HIV/AIDS is a very serious one in the field of science. There has been no real
disease that even compares to this one in the history of disease in the United States. It is a disease that has challenged the scientific community, and has perhaps led
to other medical discoveries that have proved useful for the industry. As an example of just one aspect of the scientific research involving the disease we turn to an
article which examines gene combinations. "From the time that HIV was discovered to be the cause of AIDS, researchers have been puzzled by the fact that some patients develop AIDS
shortly after being diagnosed with the virus whereas others can take years to show any sign of the disease. New research by an international team of investigators has uncovered a
genetic mechanism that may explain why some HIV-infected individuals take so long to progress to AIDS" (Lawrence, 2002; 214). One scientist indicates that "its the first time that the combination
of two unlinked genes have been shown to act together to inhibit the progression of infectious disease....she adds, this is the first study to implicate natural killer cells in the
