of modern mankind. The disease is unpinned by specific cellular and molecular aspects that complicate treatment and have so far made finding a cure impossible. Although numerous treatments
are in the experimental stages and several drugs have been used successfully to temporarily prolong the lives of persons infected with AIDS, a cure has yet to be discovered.
Without treatment the picture is grim at best, death usually occurs within a few months to a few years after the virus attack on the human system. The difficulty
that has been encountered in trying to find a cure for AIDS is disturbing given the toll AIDS is currently taking on our population. In 2004 the HIV virus,
the causative agent in AIDS, was believed to already infect some forty million people (Pike, 2007). Pike (2007), however, points out that expanded HIV testing could result in an
increase in diagnoses of HIV/AIDS by 90,000! The speed with which AIDS has spread from one region to another is, in itself, a testament to the formidable cellular and
molecular makeup of the HIV virus. The first AIDS cases were documented in 1980 in New York and California among homosexual males and
intravenous drug users. New cases soon were discoverded in many regions of the world. The disease was not limited to the U.S. but was found to be inflicting
significant damage on large populations of many third world countries, particularly third world countries in Africa and Haiti. Within one decade of its initial discovery, the number of AIDS
cases had increased to the point it was considered by many an epidemic. It had, in fact, spread to populations across the world.
