Although numerous treatments are in the experimental stages and several drugs have been used successfully to temporarily prolong the lives of persons infected with AIDS, a cure has yet to be discovered. Without treatment the picture is grim at best, death usually occurs within a few months to a few years after the virus attack on the human system. The difficulty that has been encountered in trying to find a cure for AIDS is disturbing given the toll AIDS is currently taking on our population. In 2004 the HIV virus, the causative agent in AIDS, was believed to already infect some forty million people (Pike, 2007). Pike (2007), however, points out that expanded HIV testing could result in an increase in diagnoses of HIV/AIDS by 90,000!
