Details, shadows, placement of certain objects, camera direction are of paramount importance and it can be said that God is in these details for a film. Such is the case
for Hitchcocks Vertigo. This film is especially interesting because the title itself suggests spinning and spiraling. So, the camera angles also give that illusion and effect of spinning and disorientation.
The actors, themselves, are disoriented and confused and directionless as the story moves forward. All of these elements contribute to the mise en scene that Hitchcock envisioned. The story, in
brief, is about obsessive fears, and the redemptive qualities of love. Scotty is a detective who is afraid of heights. Because of this he has left the police force to
become a private detective. A friend of his from college convinces him to help watch his wife who has become suicidal. The old friend confesses that he fears that his
wife has been possessed by the spirit of his wifes great grandmother. Scotty doesnt seem to believe all of this, but as a favor, follows her. As he comes to
know the woman, named Madeline, he falls in love with her. However, Madeline succeeds in committing suicide and Scotty is helpless to save her because of his Vertigo. Shortly after
this, and we are led to believe that he has suffered some sort of a traumatic episode from Madelines death, he meets a woman named, Judy, who remarkably reminds Scotty
of Madeline. He convinces her to dress and act like his long lost love. Vertigo can be said to be one of Hitchcocks most complex movies. On the
