may never be a definitive answer. Why? It is simple. When one discusses mere facts and figures in history, without factoring in the human equation which includes motivation, spirit and
guile, the picture is only half drawn. This paper will endeavor to draw a more complete picture by an analysis of several authorities in the field, namely: Acton, Luxemburg, Trotsky,
Tucker, Gombin, Carr, and Figes. Of this group of experts, Edward Acton states that there is at least one theory which cites outside influences as being the determining factor
for revolution, rather than the internal factor of oppression. Though the internal situations, it must be argued, had to have been there for the outside influences to take hold. The
Tsar, himself, was not a very imaginative man, who was in no way a natural leader, it would seem. Unfortunately he considered it his duty to act as
a dictator and tried to keep hold of power which he was incapable of managing effectively. His ineffectual way of governing made for an already weak type of government. When
the outside influence of World War One came along, he had managed to isolate him from all available venues who might have at one time supported him(Acton, 5-45). So, the
Great War played a direct role in bringing about those revolutions, and thus represents an important, if often overshadowed, development in Russian history. Acton states that most of this can
