in ignorance are apt to repeat their past mistakes. At least if they have some precedence (such as that proscribed by learning about a countrys history in school), at least
they have some idea of the consequences of their actions. But there is more to it than simply repeating mistakes. Another important
aspect of history is that of sovereign pride. To develop good citizens, its important those citizens know that theyre part of a chain of events that stretch back for as
long as the country is old. A history curriculum helps in this endeavor. Maxwell (2004) also points out that history curricula help
boost traditional thanking strategies for students as well, including: Comparison and contrast of cultures
The continuity and change over time Cause-and-effect relationships We touched on the latter earlier
in this paper when we discussed that students learning the cause of a mistake would hopefully not repeat it. Maxwell defines "thinking
