theyll likely have sympathizers is a change from what had happened a century ago. Though much in the way of discrimination has
been pointed out in terms of African Americans, another population that has suffered its fair share of discrimination has been the Chinese. Throughout history, and even subtly, today, the Chinese
community has bore its share of discriminatory practices for a variety of reasons. To better understand the reasons for the discrimination, its a good thought to review Chinese immigration in
the United States. Immigration "officially" began during the middle of the 19th century, between 1850 and 1880, and the purpose of the
immigration was to provide the U.S. railway system of the time with cheap labor (OConnor, 2004). However, immigration from the Chinese provinces was cut short when it was believed that
the "yellow peril" was a threat to Western civilization, so The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 brought a halt to almost all Chinese immigration until about 1943 (OConnor, 2004). At
that time, Chinese workers were brought in to help with the U.S. war effort (OConnor, 2004). Those that werent hired for plants or other war work ended up opening laundries,
stores and restaurants where they did business primarily with each other during the first part (OConnor, 2004). Recently, however, Chinese immigrants have
