to modern society. Sundiata: Epics of Mali is one such story. But how much of the story is historically verifiable and accurate? That there existed a sundiata is not often
in debate. He was the son of the King of the Mandingoes in Africa, who was given a prophecy that one of his sons would be the greatest king that
Mali had ever known. Of course there is no written history of this account, but rather it has been handed down orally for centuries. In some respects one has to
assume that some of the details were changed over time, but some of the basic facts still remain consistent. The epic retellings all state that when Sundiata was born, he
was deformed. Most did not believe him leadership material. In fact, when his half brother comes into power he fears for his life and lives in exile for many years.
It is during these years of exile that he manages to straighten his back so that he is able to walk upright. He also manages to make friends with those
whose land he passes through, sufficing to create a great and loyal army of followers. Finally, hearing of his homelands demise under a ruthless leader, Sundiata remembers his birthright and
returns. If this plotline sounds familiar to modern audiences, it should. Sundiata is often referred to as the Lion King. Disneys animated version of this story closely follows the tale
of Sundiata. Most film adaptations of this tale only tell a part of the epic journey of Sundiata. Most end with the reentry and regaining of his rightful place on
