OBriens depictions are raw leading many to wonder if his portrayals have any sort of historical accuracy. When one is judging historical accuracy of any given event in past time, one should keep in mind that there is no history ever written which is completely accurate or truthful. This is not the fault or attributable to the base nature of the historian, but rather a realization that even those who report incidents as eyewitnesses filter the story with their own understanding, prejudices and experiences of the event. This may very well have been what happened to OBrien. When Tim OBrien received his draft notice in 1968, though he opposed the war, he reported for duty and was sent to Vietnam. What he experienced there as a young man seemed to grant him a perspective on the war from both the standpoint of a young man and an idealist, and from the standpoint of a writer. What he apparently experienced there affected the way he and a whole generation perceived life, love and the American pursuit of happiness. In his book, The Things They Carried, this influence and perspective are most evident. OBrien mentions that most of the guys there called their life in America the real world which suggests that their time there seemed unreal to them, as if they were all caught in some large collective nightmare. To further this tone, OBrien shares some of the language that was used by the soldiers.
