Most Chicagoans are familiar with the location and the institution, primarily for its excellent orthopedic and back professionals, as well as its quality urgent care and emergency room. For purposes of this paper, the institution will now be referred to as "Hines Hospital." The hospital has been an institution for many, many years now, and will likely continue to be so. Hines Hospital is located near Chicago, just 12 miles west of Chicagos downtown area (Edward Hines, Jr. Hospital, 2000). The facility is a large tertiary care facility containing approximately 650 acute, intermediate and extended care beds and an Ambulatory Care Center (Edward Hines, Jr. Hospital, 2000). What this is saying is that Hines Hospital is pretty much a full-service institution providing almost every type of care - physical and mental - to its patients. Hines Hospital is one of the oldest medical institutions in the area, and has, through the years, gained a solid reputation, although it once had the reputation of being a rather sterile, huge and intimidating institution. That has changed in recent years however. In more recent years, the hospital has gained a reputation for efficiency and effectiveness, as well see later on in this paper. The hospital was named in honor of Edward Hines, Jr., a soldier from the Chicago area who died in active service during World War I (Edward Hines, Jr. Hospital, 2000).
