and education to ensure future generations are up to the task of remaining even or, even better, being stronger than their international counterparts.
One metric used in the United States focuses on whether all children are receiving and/or benefitting from public education is that of the high school drop-out rate. Even before
globalization became a factor, it was widely accepted that students completing high school had better job prospects than those who dropped out. Furthermore, a lower rate of high school drop-outs
tends to reflect more positively on society overall. In this paper, the writer has been asked to research graphical data pertaining to
the high school drop-out rate in the United States, then determine how it stacks up against drop-out rates in other countries. Graphical Data
To find the graphical data, I accessed the National Center for Education Statistics website, which is run by the U.S. Department of Education. According to the NCES, the status dropout
rate fell from 14% in 1980 to 8% in 2008 (which represents the most recent figures available) (USDE, 2011). Status dropout rate is defined as the percentage of students ages
16-24, who are not enrolled in school and havent earned a high school credential, such as a diploma or General Educational Development certificate (USDE, 2011). It was noted in this
study that much of the decline took places between 2000 and 2008, with changes in rates over time differing by race and ethnicity (USDE, 2011).
You can see the trends more clearly in the chart below: Year Total White Black Hispanic Asian/ Pacific Islander American Indian/Alaska Native 1980 14.1 11.4 19.1
