The main character, High Horse, is in love for the first time and it is his passion for an Indian maiden that drives his choices, his actions, and results in his coming of age. This story is told as if one were sitting around a campfire, listening to the storyteller share a tale of a past time. The narrator, Black Elk, tells the story of a young man, whose love and dedication toward his goal, brought him something of immense worth to him. This young man will face many tests which will show him the strength, courage, and confidence that he has inside of him. High Horse begins the story as a brash young brave. He is very much like a young teenager who is full of himself and believes that the world revolves around him. So, it comes as a rude awakening when he offers both his horses for the maidens hand in marriage and is refused. The girls father merely waves him away. Still, not taking no for an answer, he attempts to borrow a few more horses from a friend of his. But, four horses do not impress the father of the maiden either. Instead of speaking with the man directly, or setting about to use his mind to figure out a logical answer, he resorts to unethical behavior. He and his cousin, Red Deer, will steal the girl away. What the story illustrates up to this point is the fact that this young man is still thinking very much like a child. He sees something that he wants and is indignant when he cannot have it.
