the health care industry is in flux in the current environment. The industry as a whole is accustomed to regular changes, but for the past several decades the greatest
changes in the industry have been in technological capabilities. As the structure of the industry continues to evolve and as demographic and epidemiological changes continue to occur in the
general population, further change within the industry is certain. Indeed, the only absolute certainty in health care in the current environment is that it has not reached its final
form. Over the next decade, we can expect health insurance to become more elusive as costs continue to increase. The first of
the baby boomers now are reaching retirement age, and the baby boomers have changed every social institution they have traveled through to date. Americans have been struggling with weight
for years, and we have increased incidence of heart disease and a diabetes epidemic to show for our efforts. Every form of health
care can expect to witness and deal with sweeping changes over the next decade. Home health should be prepared to experience more change than most other areas of health
care. Internal Environment Rising Costs As other types of health care providers seek to control their own costs, home health will experience increased
demand. Insurers often limit the length of time a patient can remain hospitalized following a specific event or illness. They commonly require that the patient be discharged when
