The purpose of this paper is to examine how Hewlett-Packard operated during the 1980s as a PC and technology manufacturer before moving into the area of peripherals for personal computers, and becoming successful in terms of producing printers that could be tied to the personal computing systems that were becoming so popular in both homes and offices. These days, H-P does sell computers and other technology equipment, but it is best known for its high-quality, affordable printers. The industry - 1980s At the start of the 1980s, the personal computer was mainly for those who made a lot of money. Even though Tandy and Apple had come out with their first desktop computer models, mainframes were still the mode in which businesses worked, with computers primarily being used for numbers crunching or financial analysis. At-home computers - for work or for play - were extraordinarily rare, as they were slow and cumbersome, and had very little memory for even the basic software applications. As the technology changed, however, and became less expensive to produce, personal-computing systems began slowly to infiltrate the business world and the home offices. The early 1980s saw the development of basic word processing systems such as Wang and IBM DeskWriters, which had minimal storage (everything needed to be saved on floppy disks) and a slower speed; yet it was a definite improvement over the standard typewriter.
