and Justice, and Louise Erdrichs The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse, one can see that in terms of environment, their culture, and the circumstances of their birth, how each characters perspectives, desires, and motivations were shaped, regardless of era. The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse makes many sweeping statements about the treatment of the Native American at the hands of an oppressive majority. There is a kind of dry humor in the book that pervades the major themes of the book which encompass tradition, the mixture of cultures, religion, and freedom. Love Medicine explores the human capacity for love, loss, and the indomitable human spirit. Erdrich seems to be saying that the whole fabric of the Native American culture is poised to blow up and backfire in its own face unless something is done. Though her book deals primarily with events that initially took place during the 1930s through the 60s, the comments she makes through the story is still relevant no matter the time period. Erdrichs novel features Father Damien Modeste who is a Catholic missionary. In actuality, Father Damien has appeared in several of Erdrichs novels, but this time he/she is the central figure. This, of course, is the shocker. The Father is in actuality a nun who had been fleeing the sins of her past. She comes upon the body of the deceased Father Modesto and assumes his identity. The novel is written as a series of flashbacks since Modesto is now nearly a hundred years old. The series of reports are for the Popes who have continued to inquire about the indian situation.
