among the elite of these artists. His ability to plumb the depths of mankinds innermost thoughts, applying and relating them to nature, and his comments about mans place in the
Universe and his search for that place, have made his works stand the test of time. Many have stated that a man is not born,
he is created. It is said that it is the unique combination of personality, environment and life circumstances that give rise to ones perspective on life, and it colors and
influences the way in which ordinary events and situations are defined. Thus, Henry Wadsworth Longfellows life would lend him the ability to examine both sides of the human equation.
Part of that influence would be his early accessibility to an education. He was allowed at an very early age to accompany his brother to
grammar school. Later he would go on to finish both high school and college. Considering the day and age, this was quite the feat and most did not attend school
for that long. However, education has been a constant theme in the various generations of Longfellows and as such, then, it was expected that each male member of the Longfellow
family would become highly educated as well as become involved civically. Following with that, then, he took a position as a professor at Harvard
College, but later would resign this position so that he could focus on his writing full time. During this period of time in his life he would lose his first
