an important part in Hemingways stories as well. A Clean Well-Lighted Place, a short vignette dealing with the darkness that an old
man is feeling as he tells his tale in a well-lit caf?. The caf?, which the old man frequents, is a place that keeps away the shadows, which is important
for the old man, who is so despondent in the dark side of his life, that he has already attempted suicide. Basically, the caf? in the story represents the need
for almost everyone to have a "clean, well-lighted place" in which they can feel safe, or at least protected from their pain. Its here that the old man finds some
degree of protection, though he must go back out into the darkness of his life following his bout of drinking in the caf? (Lombardi).
"In Another Country," is a short story about the differences between two soldiers and their conceptualization of World War I -- to the Italian solder, the war is
closer to home, meaning that the consequences of the war are more far-reaching than they are to Nick, his counterpart. "In Another Country" refers to Europe, and refers to how
the war was examined there, versus in the United States, where it seemed to far away. Basically, the American soldier doesnt have much connection to the country of Italy, which
