bigger than life attitude. It can be said that a good deal of this zest for life and talented torment ends up in most of his characters, especially in the
lives of his heroes. Hemingways characters would break ground as the new code hero. The code hero was the type of character that lived by a certain moral code, or
set of rules that serve as a compass for the character when facing great and insurmountable odds. According to Professor Paul Totah of St. Ignatius, Hemingways hero was "a man
who lives correctly, following the ideals of honor, courage, and endurance in a world that is sometimes chaotic, often stressful and always painful"(Code Hero, 2002). Nearly all of Hemingways heroes
die in the end, but the death is always a brave one and is faced head on by the characters. The Code Hero, then, is one that follows his own
internal set of rules which tends to make Hemingway heroes free willed and non conformists. The other defining characteristic is the heroes dislike of the dark, which symbolizes death and
its source(Code Hero, 2002). The hero is given a task to perform and in doing so derives some sort of personal meaning from it. He may meet with a great
series of misfortunes, but the hero endures, because it is this constant facing of death that defines life. The code hero makes a striking appearance in all of Hemingways
works. The only character that seems a bit of a departure from this code hero is Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea, though some have argued that Santiago
