his greatest works, The Heart of Darkness. The majority of the novella takes place as a flashback by a character named Marlowe, who is a sailor aboard an English ship.
He begins to speak with a group of the passengers who are struck by his odd perspective. He tells them that in all his travels, he reckons London and most
of Europe to be the darkest places on the face of the Earth. In order to expound upon his statements, he begins to tell of his trip to Africa and
into The Heart of Darkness. As a young man, he states, he was always interested in traveling, so his family arranges for him to be placed on a steamer bound
for Africa, as its captain. When he arrives in Africa he states that there is a sense of foreboding in the air and that everywhere he looked, men were in
bondage. He speaks of the chain gangs and the lost and vacant expressions on the faces of the men. When a young native approaches Marlow, he is moved to offer
the boy some cookies. Marlow meets one of the men from his company, on the street and joins him in his hut office, but after a short while realizes that
this man is difficult to be around. With great relief, he leaves for the next leg of his trip into the interior of the Congo. His assignment is to find
the companys station where he will be working for a man named, Kurtz. He describes the trip as being a long and troublesome one, but finally they arrive
