mix of physicians, nurses and other staff can provide a comprehensive and holistic viewpoint, which can be invaluable when it comes to treating a patient or discovering new cures for
various diseases. The problem, however, is when a healthcare organizations administration puts a cross-departmental and cross-task team together without an understanding of the
dynamics between these individuals. This is exacerbated in a healthcare setting as well - turf battles and "caste systems" are common in such organizations. Physicians can have contempt for nurses,
while nurses are frustrated with physicians. But nurses arent immune from their own biases; a floor nurse is liable to be looked down on by a surgical nurse; while both
nurses look down on orderlies. Furthermore, the fifth floor nurse is going to be in a pitched battle with the eighth floor nurse. As a result, forming such a team
would lead to nothing but disaster. However, by putting together a group through Bruce Tuckmans stages of gropu development - forming, storming, norming,
performing and adjourning, the healthcare administrative staff has some hope of getting quality work out of this particular team. Lets examine these phases, one by one.
The first stage, that of forming, is when the team first comes together (Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, 2010). Members of such a team are positive and polite
to one another; or are anxious (Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, 2010). This stage could be short (as short as a single meeting) (Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, 2010). In most healthcare
situations like we mentioned above, this "forming" stage is likely to be extremely short, and will move very quickly into the storming phase.
