the future cost of health care in the United States: political and social changes or medicinal and technological advances? Support your response. This is an argument that has really heated
up, especially in the wake of the Affordable Patient Health Act (also known as healthcare reform). On the one hand, President Barack Obama and supporters of the bill point out
that, over the long run, costs should decrease under the law. However, opponents point out that this political maneuver will actually increase costs of healthcare. Paulson, in September 2010, reported
that health insurance companies are already planning to raise rates anywhere from 1% to 9% "allegedly to cover costs stemming from the new law." This, despite the fact that right
now, no one really knows how much more (or less) reform will end up costing. This is the political side of things: Insurance companies raising rates in preparation for what
MIGHT come, rather than facing facts. Furthermore, as Paulson reminds us, aging baby boomers who are surviving longer periods of time are also adding to higher health care costs.
But what about medical and technological advances? There is little doubt that this has, in the past, added to the cost of healthcare. Almost
anyone who has an understanding about the pharmaceutical industry, for example, understands that the blockbuster drugs are expensive because of the years of research undertaken and the resources necessary (not
to mention the advertising budgets, but thats for another paper). Other technologies are also expensive. But its not just technologies alone that
are creating price increases - politics and social changes (i.e., increased rates for health insurance companies and aging baby boomers) will likely continue jacking up the costs.
